This post is all about garden roses.
3 Main Types of Roses
1. Old Garden Roses
The Old Garden Rose are rose bushes that were established before 1867 as heirloom varieties. They are often referred to as “Antique Roses” or “Historic Roses.” These types of roses are easy to identify because of their pointy petals, The flowers are typically smaller than the modern garden roses, They only bloom once per season; but during that time, the blooms put off a magnificent fragrance that is unique to this type of rose. Because they have been around for such a long time, the old garden rose is a hardy plant and is disease-resistant.
2. Wild Roses
Wild roses are typically pink. They are unlike the traditional rose because they have only 5 petals. They appear spring through summer but don’t have many blossoms in the fall. They grow up to 3-6 feet tall. Wild rose flowers and leaves have medicinal properties as well! Because this amazing plant acts as a cooling agent, it can calm down heat and inflammation in a wound, If you have a heat rash or hives, you can infuse wild rose flowers in water and apply topically to effected skin. Wild Roses usually grow in California, Oregon, and Mexico.
3. Modern Garden Roses
Modern Garden Roses are more typical of what is seen in gardens today. These types of rose bushes have been established after 1867 and have taken the place of the old garden rose varieties.
These roses do not put off that strong-scent that the old garden roses have. However, they bloom many times throughout the season and often have larger blooms than the old garden rose, Their petals have a softer, rounder edge compared to the old garden rose.
Climbing VS Bush Varieties
A different way to look at types of roses is to look at their growing patterns. There are two different kinds of growing patterns that we will discuss here: climbing and bush.
Climbing
The climbing variety of rose plants don’t necessarily “climb” in the same sense that vines can climb. With a little assistance from the gardener, this variety of rose plant can be trained to scale a trellis or other form of support due to their straight, firm stems.
Use this variety of garden rose to add some enchantment to your garden.
You can grow the climbing rose plants to travel up an arched trellis as an entry point into the entire garden or a specific part of your garden.
Alternatively, you could also train this variety to climb fences that might be bordering your garden as a beautiful backdrop.
Rose Bushes
Another way to use garden roses is the rose bush. These bushes can be planted in isolation or can be grouped together and pruned to create a beautiful hedge.
It is important to note that if you are wanting to create a hedge of roses, make sure you use the rose hedge (bush) plants rather than the shrub rose plants. The rose hedge plants grow between 2-3 feet in contrast to the shrub rose plants reach between 8-10 feet high.
If you are wanting to create a nice hedge, be sure to plant the roses 24 inches apart. This will allow for plenty of soil space and air flow to prevent diseases and pests from attacking your plant.
Health Benefits
Specific variety of rose plants produce edible rose hips. These rose hips are a rich source of Vitamin C. The Elderberry Syrup I make for my family (and sell in my online store which you can access here), I add in rose hips for additional health benefits. Rose petals and rose hips are the best way to consume parts of this plant for health benefits. They help with aging, regulating hormones, boost your mood, and support your immune system.
